Agriculture is our most basic and necessary industry. It's importance to human survival cannot be overstated, since food and fiber must be produced before any other activity can follow. Therefore, if the human race is to survive, agricultural production must work in harmony with the earth's natural systems. There must be a harmonious balance between man's activities and the natural world which sustains him. Only with harmony and balance can there be permanence. Toxic, petro-chemical based, agriculture is a one way street, and it may be a dead-end street. Its supposed economics of plenty may ultimately be an economics of doom. Sustainable agriculture calls for a turning away from toxic and inhumane agricultural practices. It calls for a return to human scale farms, family-based farming, and healthy rural communities. It calls for a return to sound economics based, not on the alleged economies of scale and corporate non-accountability, but the economics of permanence, sustainability, and health. This doesn't mean a return to the stone age, it means using science and technology in a new way—a way conducive of the long-term survival of modern civilization.
