THE DRY ROAD TO
RIGHTEOUSNESS
Religious Prohibition
by William R. Carr
It's a dry road to righteousness in this country today,
Only the ACLU can show us the way.
Our public institutions are no longer free
To post the Commandments for everyone to see.
Try it and humanists will certainly take offense,
Threatening litigation, trouble, and expense.
The American Civil Liberties Union, if you please,
Is our moral shepherd and Constitutional police.
Biblical lessons are barred from the schools,
Ruled by the state, to be fit only for fools.
Public schools have been ruled spiritually
"dry."
The Holy Commandments can no longer apply.
This Prohibition was passed a few years ago;
Violate it and the ACLU will let you know.
The Bible and prayer have been given the boot.
On religious matters our schools must be moot.
To pray in school was ruled unconstitutional
But four letter words are accepted and usual.
Even teaching right from wrong is no longer fair,
That too is shunned, on the same grounds as prayer.
Between church and state there's now a thick wall,
No more prayer in class, assembly, or hall.
"God is dead!" an intellect brashly exclaimed,
"And we shall enforce it!" the court has proclaimed.
"In God We Trust" is now just a monetary
slogan,
With no place in our schools, only on paper token.
Of course, on the dollar the slogan's okay,
But not in the classroom at the beginning of day.
The symbol of Mammon is naturally exempt,
From the rulings that hold religion in contempt.
No humble thanks for food are now to be offered,
It offends the faithless, and the ACLU is bothered.
Religious freedom has now run its course,
No longer can teachers quote from its Source.
To quote the scriptures has become a federal sin,
At least in public schools it causes a din.
Religious expression is now quite an offense,
And the First Amendment provides no defense.
Of course, we now live in a much kindlier place,
Than any afore-crowned with God's holy grace.
High school shootings are only a fluke,
Hardly a matter for Mark, Matthew or Luke.
Least of all can the Commandments imply,
That salvation in heaven will ever apply.
Secular rule is now firmly entrenched,
The laws of God are finally de-benched.
Public education, 'tis said, is a Godless affair,
And the Heavens contain just matter and air.
Now all that is holy are secular creeds,
The state has supplanted our spiritual needs.
This once Christian nation is no longer so bold,
To cling to its roots, for its soul has been sold.
Prohibition was imposed a few years ago;
Violate it and the ACLU will not let you go.
