Vol. 23, No.4The 137th issue of Springhouse–otherwise known as Volume 23, Number 4–is now available. Read Bill Carr's "The Battle of Camden," an account of a little known Civil War skirmish in Johnson County, Illinois, as well as a reprinting of a nearly forgotten lecture by Robert G. Ingersoll, "Farming in Illinois." William Searles tells of his long delayed trip to War Bluff in Pope County and of the problems that confronted him along the way. Folklore enthusiast John J. Dunphy recalls the mythical alligator that allegedly smokes a pipe from the bottom of the Mississippi River. "The Traveler" by Brandi (Oliver) Drake is a moving account of her father, Rodney Oliver, who died at age 50. As always, Dixie Terry shares too many delicious recipes to list here. Just think of this issue as the one with the cover showing a deer at a pond. You can't miss it. Gary DeNeal |
